A Premature Autumn
The reality of a changing climate
Are we experiencing a false autumn?
Due to the recent drought, the trees have taken to dropping their leaves and producing more seeds. This is a sign of their survival mode kicking in and a way of protecting themselves for the future.
Older, established trees may be able to recoup their losses, but what of those younger trees?
With the dry conditions, other premature signs have been spotted, such as berries ripening earlier than expected. For the wildlife that rely on these berries for food, this could mean life or death to them.
If we start to see some rain soon, many trees could survive.
But it could take years for trees, habitats and ecosystems to truly recover from the effects of the drought.
We are already starting to see the impacts of a changing climate.
